Marcus Allen
Head of Business

What is your current role in the industry?

Marcus Allen’s journey in the hairdressing industry spans an incredible 38 years, starting at the age of 24—a later start than most, but one that quickly turned into a career of industry-defining achievements.

He began his training under John J., President of American Canada, before moving into a national salon chain, where he became the company’s top producer within two years. His rapid rise continued as he became the youngest General Manager of an eight-salon group, marking the start of his leadership in the business of hairdressing.

Marcus’s passion for education and innovation led him to work with Rusk, then Paul Mitchell, and eventually take the stage as a platform artist for Aveda, performing at five Aveda Congress events. His career accelerated when he joined Neill Corporation, the world’s largest Aveda distributor, where he played a key role in developing Paris Parker, a “test kitchen” for salon business innovation. This initiative was at the forefront of industry education, shaping Quality College, an early blueprint for business-focused hairdressing education.

Through Neill, Marcus earned the opportunity to study at Sassoon London for four months, refining his craft. During this time, he also conducted workshops and classes for George Hammer, Aveda’s UK distributor. Two years later, he moved to London to launch the first Urban Retreat salon, originally planned as an 18-month project but ultimately transforming into a 22-year journey, during which he helped build the world’s largest salon, employing 210 staff and generating over £15 million in annual revenue.

Following this, Marcus became the Global Educational Director for Unite Haircare, based in San Diego. In addition to developing cutting-edge technical education curriculums, he co-created Paramount Business, a platform delivering advanced business education across the U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia.

Upon returning to the UK, he continued to shape the industry, supporting Urban Retreat before moving to The Refinery, a multi-award-winning men’s grooming brand. Alongside these ventures, Marcus remained active in London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks over the last five years.

His focus on innovation and business transformation led him to become General Manager of Electric Space, a premium co-working salon, photography studio, cinema, and member’s space, redefining how creative professionals work and collaborate.
