Charlotte Mensah is one of the British hairdressing industry’s leading lights, with a place in the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame for three wins as Afro Hairdresser of the Year, a best-selling product line and an acclaimed salon in Portobello Road.
With a passion for education and sharing traditional Afro hairdressing techniques, she was the perfect mentor for the 2019 F.A.M.E. Team at their most recent session.
The team joined Charlotte in her salon for a day of education, working with models to create two finished looks that incorporated a series of techniques.
Working as a team, with Charlotte and her assistants, the F.A.M.E. Team four practised twist outs, threading and braiding. They also learnt Charlotte’s techniques for cleansing, combing, blow-drying and prepping Afro hair.
As well as developing fundamental skills for working with textured hair types, Charlotte also shared her insight for adding a directional finish to client and model looks, as well as sharing the secrets behind some of her award-winning Afro photoshoots.
“We learnt so much about Afro-Caribbean and Curly hair types during the day,” says team member Alastair Jubbs. “It was great to develop a better understanding of the fundamentals of working with curly hair, as well as how to execute a fashion forward finish. A huge thank you to Charlotte, as well as the Fellowship and our Team Leader Nick Irwin for arranging the opportunity.”
