A Texture Masterclass for the Barber Project
As the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Barber Project team continue through their year of education, it was over to guest mentor Hayden Cassidy to share some invaluable insight on the techniques and tricks required for working with diverse textured hair.
The Andis global educator and barbering expert was hand-picked by team leader, Jonathan Andrew, to provide the team with hands-on education that would enhance their confidence working with Afro and Asian hair types.
Hayden demonstrated two looks for the team, starting with an Afro model. She explained the differences in working with this texture, explaining that freehand cutting was the best way to achieve a uniform finish. Working freehand with clippers and finessing with scissors, she created a soft fade on the back and sides with a rounded top to flatter the model.
The second model had very straight Asian hair, which Hayden worked with to demonstrate a skin fade to textured crop, with length on top.
As she worked with the models, Hayden shared with the team her journey through barbering and stagework. She credited the numerous barbers who mentored her with topping up her self-taught skills, which have seen her go on to amass a huge social media following on Instagram and YouTube and enjoy a career educating across the globe.
“Seeing how Hayden puts her own mark on each cut was really inspiring,” says Sarah Morrissey from Sarai Hair. “She is amazing barber and I got loads from today – particularly about how to create a perfect fade on different hair types; something which I really wanted to perfect. Being able to watch and ask questions was so beneficial. I found today so inspiring!”
