ClubStar Art Team Shoot with Hooker & Young

One of the highlights of time spent on any of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s mentoring teams is the opportunity to learn from hairdressing icons.

That opportunity gets even more exciting when you have the chance to work alongside them in a professional capacity – which is exactly what happened when the ClubStar Art Team were invited to shoot with British hairdressing heroes, Gary Hooker & Michael Young.

The ClubStar Art Team – who represent the best of the Fellowship’s youth membership, aged 16-25 – were invited to Gary and Michael’s, where they took place in a shoot; mentored, as well as shot and art directed, by Hooker & Young.

As well as creating their own shoot under expert supervision, the team also picked up plenty of advice from the duo to take back and use in their own future photographic work.

As winners of countless British Hairdressing Awards and other photographic accolades, Gary and Michael were perfectly placed to share their wisdom with the team – and with the launch of their own studio in the house and Michael’s progression into photography, they have no shortage of expertise both behind the camera and behind the chair.

We were warmly welcomed into Gary and Michael’s home for a truly memorable day,” says team member Roman Sys from Trevor Sorbie. “Over refreshments, they shared their stories in hairdressing and discussed images and concepts behind their past and present projects – it was so inspiring.”

After getting to know each other, it was time to shoot. “We were introduced to our models who very kindly spent the day with us while we worked on different looks for the photo shoot that Gary and Michael had organised for us,” continue Roman. “Without giving too much away, we were encouraged to explore creative yet wearable styling, resulting in a variety of looks which Gary helped us progress ready for Michael to shoot. It was an amazing insight into how they produce such beautiful work by not just doing the hair, but being present and working with the hair in front of the lens. This highlighted just how different the hair can look on camera. From beginning to end, we learned so much. We can’t thank Gary and Michael enough. It was absolutely out of this world!”
