Fellowship Members Make Their Mark

The Fellowship for British Hairdressing is proud to celebrate the talent of its members from across the country, and nowhere is this more evident than at their Members’ Night events. These presentation evenings allow members to take to the stage and present their choice of models – no brief, just the opportunity for four minutes of creativity. The events allow any member to present, meaning the lineup is always fresh and varied with something for everyone.

Held at the Wella World Studio in London, the latest event saw 12 teams take to the stage, showcasing everything from stencilled colour to classic men’s barbering techniques.

The Amandedge team opened the night, with textured looks inspired by salon owner Amanda’s own garden. Next up was David Hartmann from WOW Hair, who looked to France for his duo of looks – a sleek modette bob and tousled undone Bardot texture. Urban Hair presented a trio of punk-influenced textures, in a dynamic palette of blue and purple.

Come As You Are was the name of Sarai’s collection of looks inspired by the early 90s, with crimping and pastel tones combined with cool girl knots and an undone finish. For David Rae hair, it was all about Gypsy SciFi; a trio of looks showcasing a bubble ponytail, curls and waterfall braids.

Showcasing men’s styling, the Manifesto team presented four looks, all rooted in their ethos of ‘cut technically, style naturally’.

Next, it was time for the evening’s host – and Fellowship President – Karine Jackson to interview the guest of honour; Jamie Stevens.

The TV favourite talked about his career highlights to date – including being named Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year in 2017 – as well as how he made it into the television industry in the first place. He also shared more about balancing his family life with work, and his belief that there’s no such thing as luck – just hard work and dedication. He commented that he wouldn’t be the hairdresser he has come to be without the support of the Fellowship – and the fact that he met his wife, Tasha, during his time on the F.A.M.E. Team!

Following Jamie and Karine’s conversation, it was back to the evening’s presentations with Gina Conway opening the second half. Her London Calling collection featured punk silhouettes, grungy pastels and 80s-inspired styling.

Mullets were the order of the day for Brandon Kirk Messinger of Zullo & Holland, as he presented two updates on the cut, updated with soft pastel tones and undone, natural styling.

The 90s served as a starting point for Maxwell’s Hairdressing, with grunge-inspired styling and DIY-feel colour. Wig work and avant-garde styling also made an appearance, following inspiring workshops as part of Project X for team member Lois Negus.

Next on stage were the Fellowship’s very own Clubstar Art Team, making their stage debut. Their Japanese punk collection featured playful shapes, quirky textures and unexpected colours – all skills picked up during their time on the team, in particular from sessions with Marc Antoni, Michelle Griffin and Jonathan Andrew. Their presentation skills were also on point, thanks to an earlier confidence-boosting masterclass with Edward Hemmings. 

Natasha Pearson from Natasha Rose Hair presented her Robotica collection next, with two models sporting full heads of tightly textured, sculptural curls.

Closing the night were the New Kids on the Block – Brooks & Brooks’ collective for young stylists. The trio of stylists were inspired by the theme of water, presenting braids inspired by shell shapes, a fishnet colour technique and a wet-look, twisted braid inspired by the ocean.

Finally, it was time to wish a very happy 92nd birthday to the Fellowship’s venerable Events Director and Patron of Honour; Ann Herman.

The evening boasted something for everyone, and also provided an opportunity for members from across the country, with varying experience, to showcase their own diverse take on British hairdressing – precisely what the Fellowship is all about.
